Reduced Water Supplies and Emergency Measures in Larnaca – Drought at the Forefront

The President of the Larnaca Water Board (EOA), Angelos Chatzicharalambous, reiterated that water savings are possible through specific measures and citizen cooperation, potentially avoiding water cuts this summer. He also emphasized the delay in addressing the drought and the lack of adequate planning by the Water Development Department. During a meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, measures to address the drought were announced. Mr. Chatzicharalambous stated that the amount of water allocated to the EOAs for 2026 will be reduced by approximately 10% compared to the previous year, but Larnaca has already taken steps to reduce its needs. The immediate measures being promoted include strengthening teams to detect and repair leaks, replacing supplies in problematic areas, and disconnecting water supply to parks, green spaces, and islands. In addition, efforts to reduce water losses will be intensified. The Larnaca EOA will collaborate with the Water Development Department to distribute nozzles to consumers, while simultaneously, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, awareness campaigns will be implemented to raise public awareness about water waste and foster a more responsible culture.
