“Blood Moon” Tonight in a Total Eclipse – But Not Visible from Cyprus

A total lunar eclipse, also known as a “Blood Moon,” will occur tonight, causing the Moon to take on a reddish hue. However, this phenomenon will not be visible from Cyprus. The eclipse will be visible from East Asia, Australia, the Pacific, most of North and Central America, and western South America. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon’s surface. There are partial and total eclipses. In a partial eclipse, only a portion of the Moon is covered by the Earth’s shadow. In a total eclipse, the Sun, Earth, and Moon align perfectly, causing the Moon to be fully enveloped in the Earth’s shadow. This causes the Moon’s characteristic “blood-red” color. NASA explains that the Earth’s atmosphere scatters light, illuminating the Moon with an orange-red hue during a total eclipse. Although one might expect the Moon to be completely dark, the refraction of light in the atmosphere creates this impressive phenomenon.
