Chios Mastic: €20 Million Economic Boost for Mastic Villages

Chios Mastic, a unique product with global recognition, significantly contributes to the economic development and demographic renewal of the mastic villages in southern Chios. Production is expected to exceed 200 tons this year, with the Union of Mastic Producers of Chios (E.M.Ch.) proceeding with full payment to producers within a month. It is estimated that over €20 million will be channeled into the local economy by May. E.M.Ch., with approximately 4,500 members and an annual turnover of €24.5 million, has contributed to reducing the average age of mastic producers to below 40 years. About 80% of production is exported to 55 countries, with demand exceeding supply. Chios mastic has been recognized as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) since 1997 and was included in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO in 2015. E.M.Ch. invests in research, promotion and modernization, ensuring the quality of the product at all stages of production.
