Metzola: "Cyprus can continue to count on EP support"

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, assured the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, of the continued support of Cyprus from the European Parliament, welcoming him to the plenary session in Strasbourg ahead of Cyprus's assumption of the Presidency of the EU Council. Ms. Metzola stressed that the Cyprus issue is a common European issue and pledged support for a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, in accordance with UN resolutions and EU values. Metzola acknowledged the importance of the Cypriot Presidency at a critical time for Europe and the world, expressing confidence in Cyprus's ability to lead and address the challenges. She emphasized the need to ensure Europe's competitiveness, improve the lives of citizens and businesses, and strengthen security and defense. Furthermore, Ms. Metzola expressed her belief that Cyprus, with its experience and geographical location, can contribute to connecting Europe with the world and finding solutions to common problems. She praised Cyprus for its ability to bring people together and promote cooperation. Metzola referred to specific priority areas for the next six months, such as strengthening the Migration and Asylum Pact, simplifying procedures to improve the functioning of the EU, and enhancing security at all levels, including energy independence and support for Ukraine.
