US Sends Ukrainian-Tested Anti-Drone Systems to Middle East Amid Iran Concerns

The United States is deploying Merops anti-drone systems, tested in Ukraine, to the Middle East in response to attacks by Iran. These small, vehicle-launched systems use radio waves, radar, or thermal signatures to detect and intercept drones. American military personnel are also being sent to operate and train others on these systems. Perennial Autonomy, the manufacturer of Merops, will provide additional systems, and Ukraine may contribute trainers, responding to requests from the US and its allies. The experience of Ukraine in countering Iranian drones has attracted interest from Gulf countries, such as Qatar, who are sending delegations to study Ukrainian methods. This move marks a role reversal, as for years the US has been sending equipment to Ukraine to study how to counter Russian drones. Now, Ukraine has become a testing ground for defensive systems used in the US's new conflict against Iran, particularly in countering Iranian Shahed drones, which are also used by Russia. The Merops systems have already been deployed in Poland and Romania and have proven particularly effective, especially with Ukrainian forces. Their use is an attempt to limit the destructive and lethal attacks from Iran in the region, as well as an indication of growing concern over Iranian military technology.
