Lula and Macron Back Strengthening UN, Against Trump's 'Peace Council'

The presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and France, Emmanuel Macron, have expressed their support for strengthening the UN, as a response to Donald Trump's initiative to create a 'Peace Council'. France has already rejected Trump's proposal, while Lula has expressed his desire for the Council's work to be limited to resolving the crisis in the Gaza Strip. During their telephone conversation, the two leaders called for the alignment of peace initiatives with the mandates of the UN Security Council. Trump's 'Peace Council', initially designed to resolve the war in Gaza, now aspires to address conflicts worldwide, which would make it competitive with the UN. Lula had previously spoken by telephone with Trump, asking him to limit the scope of the new body to Gaza and to include a representative of Palestine. The two leaders also discussed the situation in Venezuela, condemning violence and violations of international law, and emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the region.
