Loizidis on Police Disciplinary Procedures: “Parliament Made a Wise Decision”

Nikos Loizidis, representative of the Police Branch of the “Equality” trade union, expressed satisfaction with the withdrawal of a controversial amendment to the disciplinary procedures for police officers and firefighters. The amendment concerned cases where the employee is dismissed from service during the process. Initially, two extreme approaches were proposed: suspending the disciplinary proceedings in the event of a criminal case and continuing them indefinitely, even after the person's retirement. MPs Leonides, Damianou, Tornaritis and Eustathiou argued that imposing a penalty after leaving the service is ineffective and contrary to GRECO’s recommendations for the speedy adjudication of disciplinary cases. Mr. Loizidis also mentioned the trade union's positive attitude towards the possible installation of cameras on police uniforms, provided that there is relevant legislation to ensure the protection of personal data and the lawful use of data. In a statement, the Cyprus Police Association (CPA) stressed the importance of speeding up the adjudication of disciplinary cases and proposed the establishment of a special committee for this purpose, in order to avoid prolonged delays and undermine confidence in the rule of law.
