Cyprus Fire Service Reports Increased Wildfires and Announces Modernization Plans

The Cyprus Fire Service responded to 13,401 incidents in 2025, including 7,154 wildfires, according to a presentation by Chief Fire Officer Nikos Longinos. There has been an increase in wildfires by 4.31% in urban areas and 8.81% in rural areas, with 133.46 square kilometers of land burned in the countryside. The Fire Service is proceeding with the recruitment of new personnel and the upgrading of infrastructure, while a gap has been identified in covering wildfires in mountainous areas during the night. Furthermore, the Fire Service carried out 1,959 rescues from 2,307 special service calls, but unfortunately, 10 people lost their lives in fires, mainly in Limassol. Mr. Longinos emphasized the need for fire stations in rural areas to operate on a 24-hour basis, as well as the increasing demands of the operational environment. As part of the effort to address wildfires promptly, the Fire Service will seek the assistance of private drone operators for surveillance, while sensors have already been installed in industrial areas and forests. The Service has 13 aerial vehicles available for the summer period, with the acquisition of two more planned in the next two years. The Chief Fire Officer expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Justice for his support of the Service, while the presentation highlighted the need for continuous strengthening of the Fire Service's personnel, fleet, and infrastructure in order to effectively respond to the increasing challenges.
