Letymbiotis: Those Affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease Deserve a Responsible Attitude from Everyone

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that those affected by foot-and-mouth disease deserve an honest, transparent and responsible attitude from everyone. He announced that European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Oliver Varhelyi, will be in Cyprus on Friday for meetings with authorities and livestock farmers. Mr. Letymbiotis stressed that the Government is open to any proposal for the effective management of the problem, as long as it is realistic and responsible. Referring to criticism of the Government's handling of the issue, Mr. Letymbiotis called for responsible criticism, based on the facts and with awareness of the obligations arising from EU membership. Mr. Varhelyi will visit the “Zenon” Coordination Center at Larnaca Airport, where he will meet with the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, and representatives of affected livestock units. Subsequently, meetings will be held with agricultural organizations, producers and officials of state services, as well as a meeting with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. Mr. Letymbiotis stated that the Government has taken all necessary steps in constant coordination with European institutions, and that Mr. Varhelyi has stated that the Government is doing an “excellent job”. The visit of the European Commissioner is an important opportunity for Cyprus to discuss the issue of foot-and-mouth disease at European level and to request support for dealing with the crisis. The Government is committed to taking all necessary measures to limit the spread of the disease and protect livestock farming.
