Letymbiotis: Commission Actions for Appointment of New Special Envoy

The European Commission is already taking the necessary steps to appoint a new Special Envoy for Cyprus, following the resignation of Johannes Hahn due to his appointment as President of the Central Bank of Austria. Mr. Hahn informed the President of the Republic of his decision, expressing his regret and emphasizing the importance of resolving the Cyprus issue for Cyprus and the EU. Mr. Hahn stated that the increased obligations of his new position do not allow him to adequately respond to the requirements of his mission as Special Envoy. The issue was also discussed during the recent meeting between the President of the Republic and the President of the European Commission. The European Commission has already begun the necessary actions to appoint a successor, with the aim of quickly completing the process. The Government believes that the timely replacement of Mr. Hahn is important for continuing efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.
