ECB's Koehler: Maintaining Flexibility in Monetary Policy is Crucial – Situation Remains Uncertain

Martin Koehler, a member of the European Central Bank's (ECB) Executive Board, warned that the ECB may need to take action if the euro continues to rise, as this could affect inflation forecasts. Koehler described the recent appreciation of the euro against the dollar as “moderate” and not currently requiring a response, but emphasized that the ECB will closely monitor the situation. A stronger euro could lead to lower import prices, but also reduced competitiveness compared to the US. Koehler dismissed the idea of a specific exchange rate target, noting that the ECB's goal is inflation. Furthermore, he stated that trade tensions remain a factor making it difficult to formulate stable forecasts for European monetary policy.
