Lille to Host New EU Customs Authority

The city of Lille in France has been chosen as the location for the new European Customs Authority (EUCA) following an agreement between the EU Council and the European Parliament. The new authority, with approximately 250 employees, will coordinate and support national customs authorities to ensure uniform application of rules throughout the EU. The selection of Lille came after a thorough evaluation of nine candidate cities and marks a significant step towards reforming the EU's customs framework, adapting it to modern trade challenges. Cyprus, through its Ambassador to the EU, Christina Rafti, welcomed the decision, emphasizing the cooperation between institutions and the efficiency of the process. The Ambassador highlighted the importance of the new authority for the modernized customs union of the EU, a long-term common goal. European Parliament rapporteur Dirk Gotink stated that the selection process was more engaging than previous ones, ensuring broader majority support for the final candidates. Lille and Rome were the frontrunners after seven rounds of voting. Gotink expressed confidence in Lille's readiness, citing France's strong tradition in the field of customs and its capabilities in cybersecurity, crucial for managing large volumes of data. The choice of the headquarters paves the way for the completion of the overall reform of the EU's customs framework, while French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his satisfaction with the selection, emphasizing France's commitment to an open and European metropolis.
