Traffic Problem in Cyprus: Thoughts on Modern Public Transport such as Tram

The Parliamentary Spokesperson of DIPA, Alekos Tryfonidis, highlighted the need for comprehensive solutions to the traffic problem, emphasizing that there is no simple fix but requires a combination of interventions and long-term planning. The Government, in collaboration with the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, has developed a pan-Cypriot strategic plan to decongest urban centers by strengthening regional connectivity. The central axis of this strategy is connecting the countryside with major urban centers to reduce traffic congestion in cities. Specific road projects in Paphos (Paphos-Chrysochous), Limassol (Limassol-Saitta, northern bypass) and Nicosia (Nicosia-Solia-Marathasa, Nicosia-Palechori, peripheral motorway) are mentioned as important interventions. Particular emphasis is placed on the Nicosia peripheral motorway, which is expected to allow drivers from mountainous areas to avoid the city center, saving time, fuel and reducing pollution. Mr. Tryfonidis pointed out that some of these projects have been delayed for decades due to specific interests that favored the concentration of development in cities. Today, the Ministry of Public Works and the Government are making coordinated efforts to promote the projects without obstacles. Phases of the Paphos-Chrysochous road have already been completed and procedures are underway for the Limassol-Saitta road, while the next phase of the Paphos-Chrysochous road is expected to be announced.
