Livestock Farmer on Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Border Closures 'Should Have Been Considered'

A livestock farmer from Idalion, Charalambos Athanasiou, spoke on the “First Page” show about the spread of foot-and-mouth disease and the reaction of livestock farmers. He highlighted the chronic dysfunction of the state mechanism and the lack of prevention, citing last year's fire season as an example. Mr. Athanasiou acknowledged the possibility of responsibility on the part of livestock farmers, but stressed that the priority now is to limit the spread of the disease, as the animals, the economy and the future of the country are at stake. In the Dalia area, strict self-protection measures have already been taken, with farms closed and vehicles disinfected. The livestock farmer expressed the opinion that more drastic decisions should have been taken, such as closing the border crossings and intensifying control in the dead zone, as the area borders it. He recalled that there were warnings since December, but adequate measures were not taken. Referring to the process of managing dead animals, Mr. Athanasiou stressed that they cannot be hidden, as everything is recorded and a specific procedure is followed for isolation, notification of the competent authorities and cremation. However, he denounced organizational shortcomings, such as the lack of drivers to collect the dead animals.
