Wine, Beer or Spirits: Which Alcohol Harms Health Less, According to Research

New research suggests that the impact of alcohol consumption on health may vary depending on the type of drink. While high alcohol consumption is generally associated with negative health outcomes, the study showed that spirits, beer, and cider were associated with an increased risk of mortality, while wine was associated with a lower risk. Specifically, moderate wine consumption was linked to a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death compared to consuming other alcoholic beverages, which was linked to a 9% higher risk. Researchers warn that these findings apply to the general population and that risks may be higher for people with chronic conditions or cardiovascular disease. The study was based on data from more than 340,000 adults in the United Kingdom and highlights that health risks depend not only on the amount but also on the type of alcohol consumed.
