Commission: Entire Cyprus Under Restriction Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease Until May 1st

The European Commission has placed the entire Republic of Cyprus under a “further restricted zone” due to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, extending the restrictions that previously applied only to specific areas. The decision was made due to the rapid increase in disease outbreaks and the difficulties in fully implementing management protocols. The measures will be in effect until May 1, 2026, with the possibility of extension. To date, approximately 16,000 animals have died, representing 50% of the animals in infected units. The incomplete completion of culling is considered a major factor maintaining active outbreaks. The measures include restrictions on animal movements and exports, with the exception of halloumi, the production of which involves heat treatment that neutralizes the virus. Placing the entire Cyprus under this category means that control measures based on Regulation (EU) 2020/687 apply everywhere, with the aim of preventing the spread of the virus. The government and Parliament are on alert and are expected to discuss the issue urgently.
