Commission Approves Proposals for EU-UK Agreement on Gibraltar

The European Commission has approved proposals for a new agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom regarding Gibraltar. This agreement complements the existing trade and cooperation agreement, as Gibraltar was not included in it. The aim of the agreement is to ensure the prosperity of the region, remove physical barriers between Spain and Gibraltar, and protect the Schengen area, the EU single market, and the customs union. Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, emphasized the importance of the agreement for legal certainty, business confidence, and stability in the daily lives of citizens, given that approximately 15,000 people cross the border between Gibraltar and Spain every day. The agreement is based on a political agreement reached in June 2023 between representatives of the EU, the United Kingdom, and Gibraltar. The approval process involves submitting the proposals to the EU Council for signature and completion, as well as approval by the European Parliament. The European Commission expects the agreement to enhance legal security and quality of life in the region, promoting cooperation between Gibraltar and Spain. This agreement represents a significant step towards resolving issues arising after Brexit and ensuring the smooth functioning of relations between the EU, the United Kingdom, and Gibraltar, especially in matters of trade and the movement of people.
