Commission: Halloumi Excluded from Protection in EU-Australia Agreement – Window Open for Future Inclusion

The European Commission clarified that halloumi is not included in the EU-Australia trade agreement, as the Halloumi Geographical Indication (GI) was not part of the EU's initial list for protection in Australia, compiled in 2019. Halloumi was only registered at the EU level in 2021, making its inclusion in the initial list impossible. However, the agreement provides a mechanism for future expansion of GI protection. This means that halloumi could be added to the list in future negotiations between the EU and Australia, through a due process. The Commission stressed that its commitment to protecting authentic production remains strong, alongside the conclusion of trade agreements. The possibility of including halloumi in the agreement's protection regime remains open, but there is no specific timeline for this. The clarification was made in response to a question from CNA, highlighting the importance of protecting Cypriot products and ensuring their quality and authenticity.
