Halloumi Excluded from Protection in EU-Australia Agreement

The European Commission clarified that halloumi is not protected by the EU-Australia trade agreement, as it was not included in the initial list of geographical indications drawn up in 2019. Halloumi was registered at the EU level only in 2021, so it was too late to be included in the initial list. However, the agreement provides for the possibility of future expansion of protection, by amending the list after the agreement comes into force. The Commission is committed to protecting the authentic production of halloumi and is considering including it in the protection regime in future negotiations.
