CYCN: ONEK Should Not Become a Field of Personal Disputes

The Cyprus Youth Centers Organization (CYCN) expressed deep concern over recent developments within the Youth Organization of Cyprus (ONEK), including resignations from the Board of Directors and the resulting inability to form a quorum. CYCN emphasizes that ONEK belongs to the youth of Cyprus and must operate with transparency, institutional responsibility, and effectiveness, without becoming a field of personal disputes. The organization calls on the executive and legislative branches to take immediate action to restore the smooth functioning of ONEK, ensuring that the public and the interests of young people remain a priority. They highlight the need for an immediate and substantial review of the legislation governing ONEK, in order to create a modern and functional institutional framework with distinct roles, accountability, and conflict prevention mechanisms. CYCN believes that the current crisis underscores the need for a comprehensive review of ONEK's legal framework, with the aim of preventing similar problems in the future. This includes ensuring institutional continuity and avoiding the politicization of the organization's operations. Finally, CYCN states its willingness to contribute to a sincere and institutional dialogue with the state to strengthen and modernize youth policy in Cyprus, offering its expertise and experience to achieve these goals.
