Congress-Israel-Greece-Cyprus Strengthen Cooperation Axis - Message to Ankara

In a period of increased geopolitical fluidity in the Eastern Mediterranean, lawmakers from Israel, Greece, Cyprus, and the US Congress met in Jerusalem on Tuesday to strengthen the four-way strategic alliance and coordinate actions against Turkey's growing regional influence. The meeting, held partly via teleconference, took place in an uncertain environment, against the backdrop of increased US military presence and developments in Iran. Participants referred to a "rearrangement of axes" in the Middle East, with a weakening of the Iranian Shiite axis and the rise of a Sunni axis. The deepening of cooperation between Israel, Greece, Cyprus and the US is considered a strategic response to Turkish ambitions. Particular emphasis was placed on the plan to interconnect the electricity grids of the three countries – a project described as an "energy highway" and will be the longest and deepest underwater power cable in the world. Further cooperation in the field of natural gas is also being explored, with the aim of creating an energy corridor to Europe and possibly to Arab countries. The trilateral cooperation between Israel, Greece and Cyprus has been consolidated in recent years through successive summits and defense agreements. From the US side, it was emphasized the need to clearly define allies in the region, with critical reference to Turkey and its influence in various regional crises. Some lawmakers described Turkey as a "military challenge" to Israel. The meeting marks an effort to coordinate and strengthen cooperation between the four sides, in a period of increased geopolitical instability and competition in the Eastern Mediterranean. Overall, this meeting is a clear indication of the desire to strengthen regional stability and address the challenges posed by Turkey's growing influence, as well as developments in the wider Middle East region. The focus on energy cooperation and the creation of an energy corridor to Europe are important elements of this strategic alliance.
