The Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, presented the priorities of the Cypriot presidency for Cohesion Policy to the Regional Development Committee (REGI) of the European Parliament. He stressed that geography should not determine opportunities and emphasized the importance of agriculture and livestock farming for Cohesion Policy. Mr. Keravnos referred to the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in Cyprus, emphasizing the need to support farmers and livestock farmers who have been affected. He pointed out that the crisis will have serious consequences for the production of milk, yogurt, and halloumi exports. He underlined the importance of continuing Cohesion Policy with a human-centered approach and the need for balanced development, including regions and island areas. He pointed out that Cohesion Policy contributed to a 6% increase in Cyprus's GDP and the creation of more than 25,000 new jobs during the 2014-2020 programming period. The Minister of Finance also emphasized strengthening the EU's internal resilience and promoting strategic autonomy as priorities of the Cypriot Presidency.
