Thunderbolt for Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Let's Think of Farmers, the Blow to Milk, Yogurt and Halloumi Exports

The Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, presented the priorities of the Cypriot presidency for the Cohesion Policy to the Regional Development Committee (REGI) of the European Parliament, emphasizing that “geography cannot determine opportunities.” He also referred to the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in Cyprus, emphasizing the importance of agriculture and livestock farming for the Cohesion Policy. Mr. Keravnos stressed that agriculture and livestock farming are the basis for food production, the protection of health and the environment, as well as for the development of industry and exports. The outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has caused a serious blow to farmers, with thousands of animals having to be slaughtered, affecting milk production, yogurt and halloumi exports. He emphasized the importance of a human-centered approach to Cohesion Policy and the need for balanced development, including regions and island areas. Cohesion Policy has contributed significantly to the development of Cyprus, increasing GDP and creating new jobs. The Minister of Finance referred to the transformative impact of Cohesion Policy on Cyprus, noting that during the programming period 2014-2020, its interventions contributed to an increase in GDP of 6% and the creation of more than 25,000 new jobs.
