Outcry Over Fidias's 'Pellos' Remark Reaches European Parliament

The Cyprus Paralympic Committee will send a letter of protest to the European Parliament regarding the offensive reference made by MEP Fidias Panagiotou to "pellos" (a derogatory term) when referring to people with intellectual disabilities. The Committee's president, Andreas Georgiou, expressed strong dissatisfaction with Mr. Panagiotou's behavior, emphasizing that the issue has taken on serious dimensions and requires immediate reaction from European authorities. The Committee has requested a public apology from Mr. Panagiotou to Paralympic athletes and their families, which has not yet been made. Mr. Georgiou stressed that the apology should have been made immediately after the issue became public, if there was a genuine intention. Mr. Georgiou underlined that disabilities are classified as physical, visual, and intellectual, and that all individuals have the right to participate in sports and be treated with respect. Mr. Panagiotou's attitude, reportedly eating and laughing during the discussion, was considered unacceptable. Similar views were expressed by the president of the Pan Cypriot Organization of the Blind, Christakis Nikolaidis, who described Mr. Panagiotou's intervention as "out of control" and warned that such behavior not only harms people with disabilities but also the image of Cyprus.
