Complaints within and outside the Cyprus National Health System: Unnecessary Surgery, Poor Patient Care, and Drug Shortages

The Cyprus Patients' Rights Observatory recorded 37 complaints last month and a total of 500 for 2025 regarding healthcare providers and services within and outside the Cyprus National Health System (CNHS). One of the most serious complaints concerns a patient who was informed about a meniscus surgery that never took place, while the relevant entry was made in the CNHS. Other complaints relate to inadequate patient care, drug shortages, changes in drug prescriptions, and issues with CNHS referrals. Furthermore, a husband was denied the right to stay with his wife during her hospitalization due to her emotional distress. Finally, a case was reported of a patient losing valuable time trying to schedule an examination at a hospital, as no doctor of the required specialty was available. The Observatory has contacted the competent authorities to investigate the complaints.
