Complaint to European Parliament Against Pheidi Panayiotou over 'Derogatory' Remark

The Cypriot Paralympic Committee announced that it will file a complaint to the European Parliament against MEP Pheidi Panayiotou, due to his use of the word “pellos” to describe people with intellectual disabilities during a podcast. The Committee believes that this statement is offensive to the Paralympic movement and to all people with disabilities. The President of the Cyprus Confederation of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (KYSOA), Themis Anthopoulou, described Panayiotou's view as a “rotten perception”, emphasizing that it refers to outdated and racist views of people with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Anthopoulou expressed her disappointment at the use of such language by a representative of Cyprus in the European Parliament. KYSOA stressed that Panayiotou's statement is not simply a mistake, but a deeply rooted view that devalues and marginalizes people with intellectual disabilities. The organization calls on Panayiotou to reconsider his views and respect the rights and dignity of all people.
