Environmentalists’ Complaint: Destruction in Pedieos Forest Continues – Eucalyptus Trees Cut Down Due to Construction (Images)

Environmentalists are reporting ongoing destruction in the Pedieos forest, with eucalyptus trees being cut down at the root due to construction work for the construction of an apartment building. They recall previous protests over the felling of dozens of trees on a private plot near the Pedieos River. The Forestry Department justified that it could not prohibit the felling of trees as a building permit had already been issued, while reminding of the need to inform the Forestry Department before issuing a building permit. Environmentalists call on the new Parliament to positively consider their proposal, so that the Forestry Department has the ability to set binding conditions or prohibit development in areas with significant trees. In addition, they report that even trees for which a felling permit has not been issued are being undermined or their roots cut during construction, indicating a lack of supervision. Residents of the area confirm the complaints. Environmentalists call on the competent authorities to immediately stop the construction work until the protection of greenery on the plot on Hydra and Larissa streets is ensured.
