Complaint of Bullying of Students by Teacher: "It's Very Serious"

Ombudsman for Children, Elena Pericleous, commented on a complaint regarding alleged bullying and belittling of students by a teacher, which is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Authority. The complaint was anonymous and initially submitted to an independent authority due to a lack of a way to inform the complainant. The Ombudsman stressed the seriousness of the allegations, emphasizing that bullying, belittling, or stigmatizing children by a teacher is a particularly worrying phenomenon. Pericleous expressed particular concern about the possibility of students being targeted due to their socio-economic status, emphasizing that stigmatization for such reasons is very serious. At the same time, she raised the issue of procedures within the school, pointing out that the failure to report the incident to the school but to an external authority indicates gaps in the reporting and management mechanisms for such incidents. The Ombudsman stressed that a modern school should inspire children to report such incidents immediately, and not to turn to external authorities. She emphasized the need to create an effective mechanism for recording such complaints at the Ministry of Education. She acknowledged that such incidents are not isolated, but recurring and linked to broader issues of inequality. Finally, Pericleous stated that the identity of the complainant remains unknown, while the Ministry of Education is expected to take the necessary steps to investigate the case. The case highlights the need to strengthen mechanisms to protect children from bullying and belittling in the school environment.
