Patient Death at Larnaca General Hospital Sparks Investigation

The family of a 72-year-old patient who died at the Larnaca General Hospital has filed an official complaint regarding the conditions of her care and potential shortcomings that may have contributed to her death. In a letter addressed to the Minister of Health and the heads of the Cyprus Public Health Services Organization (OKYPY), the relatives express concerns about the actions taken during the hospitalization and highlight the lack of medical and nursing care due to the chaos caused by a serious shooting incident at the hospital. According to the complaint, the patient was admitted to the hospital on January 17, 2026, experiencing severe discomfort due to COVID-19, but it took five hours for a doctor to examine her. The initial diagnosis was sepsis, and she was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Unit. However, the relatives claim that the situation at the hospital was chaotic due to the shooting incident, resulting in other patients not receiving the necessary care. The relatives state that doctors assured them the patient’s condition would evolve normally and the presence of a family member was not necessary. Despite the initial assurance that the patient's health was good, they were later informed of her death, causing shock and anger within the family. The family demands an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the patient's death and the implementation of measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing that any delay or indifference can cost lives. This complaint raises serious questions about the quality of care provided in public hospitals and the need for improvement in procedures, especially during times of crisis and increased workload.
