Abolition or Amendment of the Social Support Agency – What the Proposed Laws Provide

The government is preparing a bill to abolish the Independent Social Support Agency – known as the First Lady's Fund – and transfer its responsibilities to the Grants and Subsidies Service of the Ministry of Finance. Two bills on the matter are being discussed in the House Institutions Committee, one from AKEL and one from DISY. The DISY proposal provides for strengthening the transparency and accountability of the Agency, with measures such as the publication of donations over €500 and the appointment of a Chairman with integrity and political impartiality. AKEL proposes the abolition of the Agency, believing that it favors institutional entanglement and corruption, and argues that student welfare can be adequately covered by the Cyprus Scholarship Foundation (CSFP).
