Carnival 2026: Limited Measures to Address Toxic Sprays - Ban on Street Vendors and Loopholes

Local authorities in Limassol are attempting to restrict the use of toxic sprays during the carnival, following reports of their dangerous nature. The measure being implemented is a ban on their sale by street vendors in carnival areas, however, this is considered insufficient as there are many other sources of distribution, such as kiosks and supermarkets. The Municipality of Limassol requested the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry to ban their import, but received no response. Additionally, they informed the Police about the ban and are requesting intensive controls. The cost of policing will be covered by the Police budget, following a legal opinion. The Mayor of Limassol is calling on the public to avoid the use of sprays, proposing alternative forms of entertainment, such as paper battles. A Deputy Mayor of Aglantzia characterizes the measure as "paradoxical".
