Capodistrias, Roxandra, and Smaragdis: Love and Souls

An article examines the platonic love between Ioannis Kapodistrias and Roxandra Stourdza, from their first meeting in 1809 to Kapodistrias's death in 1831. Despite mutual attraction and deep friendship, Kapodistrias chose to dedicate himself entirely to duty and his diplomatic career, without proposing marriage. Roxandra, despite her initial expectation, supported his decision and devoted herself to the struggle for Greek liberation, providing significant assistance through education, care, and fundraising. Kapodistrias and Roxandra maintained a strong intellectual connection and mutual support, each inspiring the other. The article analyzes the significance of this unfulfilled love and the reason why Yannis Smaragdis gave particular emphasis to this relationship in his film about Kapodistrias. They exchange letters full of tenderness and devotion, even when Kapodistrias is forced to leave Russia due to the Tsar's refusal to support the Greek Revolution.
