"Warning Bell" for Handmade Candles - Warnings About Chemical Hazards

The Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) is warning of potential health and safety risks to consumers from the increasing amateur production of scented candles and room fragrance products. The production of these products, often in spaces without adequate ventilation, poses risks due to the chemicals they contain. According to the DLI, fragrance products contain chemical mixtures (essential oils, synthetic compounds, solvents) that can cause irritation, respiratory problems, and environmental hazards. The designation of a product as 'natural' does not guarantee its safety. Producers and importers are required to comply with European Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) for the correct classification, labeling, and packaging of products. The label of each hazardous chemical mixture must include hazard pictograms, hazard and precautionary statements, as well as the 16-digit UFI code. In addition, information on the composition of hazardous products must be communicated to the European Database of Poison Centers. The DLI emphasizes that amateur production does not exempt anyone from legal obligations and calls on consumers to prefer products with clear labeling, read the instructions for use carefully, and avoid products of unknown origin.
