Brussels Courts Erdogan

Brussels is demonstrating a policy of courting Turkey, despite its continued violations of international law and controversial domestic policy. The recent visit of the Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, to Ankara marks a new phase in EU-Turkey relations, with an emphasis on geopolitical and economic cooperation. The EU appears willing to facilitate the process of issuing Schengen visas for Turkish citizens, while also discussing the upgrading of the Customs Union. However, Turkey is not meeting the EU's requirements for alignment with the community acquis and continues to violate international law, especially in relation to Cyprus. The EU seems to be offering “gifts” to Turkey (such as funding projects from the European Investment Bank) without demanding corresponding concessions. This behavior raises questions about the priorities and consistency of European policy towards Turkey. Turkey, despite its obligations, continues to challenge the interests of other states and violate the rights of its citizens.
