Cyprus Court Sentences Man to 13 Years for Sexual Assaults

A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Permanent Criminal Court of Famagusta for a series of serious sexual offenses against a 26-year-old foreign woman. The offenses took place between July and September 2023 in Ayia Napa and Paralimni. The man was found guilty of 15 out of 16 charges against him, including eight counts of rape, sexual assault, threats, and stalking. The court emphasized the severity of the offenses and the systematic nature of the defendant's behavior. The sentence was imposed considering Cypriot and English case law for similar offenses, as well as the fact that the offenses were multiple and repetitive. Furthermore, the court took into account the defendant's criminal record, which included previous convictions for other offenses, although not of a sexual nature. The 13-year sentence was imposed as a concurrent sentence for the rape charges, representing one of the highest penalties imposed in similar cases. This case highlights the seriousness of sexual offenses and the need for strict punishment of perpetrators, as well as the protection of victims.
