Critical Week Ahead for Iran, CNN Analyst Assesses

CNN international affairs analyst Brett McGurk assesses that the coming week will be critical for Iran and developments in the Middle East. Despite efforts towards diplomatic solutions, McGurk expresses reservations about their success, given the convergence of three issues: Iranian missiles, protests and their suppression, and the nuclear program. According to the analyst, the US became more involved after the protests and violent crackdown. McGurk predicts that in the event of military action, the US will initially target missile launchers and possibly Iranian nuclear targets, such as the uranium enrichment facility near Natanz. He also anticipates attacks on targets related to Iran's repressive apparatus, such as the Revolutionary Guard and the Basij militia. His assessment is that such an operation will be significant and will last for days, possibly weeks, with the US deployment of forces being unprecedented in decades. According to CNN sources, the USS Gerald Ford carrier strike group has been located near Gibraltar, while the US President is considering various options, from limited strikes to prolonged operations. However, so far, no target list has been given to US forces. The analyst questions the success of diplomacy, as Iran usually demands extensive lifting of sanctions in exchange for concessions on the nuclear program. The situation remains fluid and the next week is expected to be decisive for the region.
