Supermarkets Reassure Public: Lamb Prices Won't Reach €30

Supermarkets are reassuring the public that lamb prices will not significantly increase for Easter, dismissing rumors of prices reaching €30 per kilo. Andreas Hadjiadamou, Executive Secretary of the Pan-Cypriot Supermarkets Association, described discussions about price increases and shortages as exaggerations that are repeated every year. He assured that there is a full supply of products and that supply continues uninterrupted, both from local production and abroad. He explained that temporary shortages are due to increased demand from consumers and not to real problems in the market. Regarding lamb, he described reports of prices of 20-30 euros per kilo as exaggerated and assured that supermarkets will offer options at prices similar to last year. He also denied the existence of profiteering by members of the Association, but admitted that there are cases of exploitation in other sectors, such as the increase in the price of liquefied petroleum gas. Mr. Hadjiadamou called on all stakeholders to show responsibility and stressed that competition between supermarkets benefits consumers. Finally, he expressed the view that the 'household basket' did not contribute substantially to reducing costs and warned that careless public statements about price increases could reinforce exploitative phenomena.
