Kadis: Aiming for a Coherent Framework for Marine Protection

Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Kostas Kadis, stated that the Cypriot Presidency of the EU aims to shape a coherent policy framework for the protection of the seas and the sustainable development of maritime activities. The Cypriot Presidency coincides with a critical phase, as important initiatives are being promoted, such as the evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy and the development of strategies for coastal communities and islands. The goal is to substantially support these communities, with an emphasis on the new generation and sustainable development. In addition, the European Ocean Agreement will be implemented in 2026, with the Ocean Act strengthening the implementation of marine policies. Simultaneously, the Vision for Fisheries and Aquaculture for 2040 will be developed, and the Ocean Eye initiative will be implemented to monitor the condition of the seas. Finally, the importance of maritime security was emphasized, given that the majority of EU external trade and intercontinental internet connectivity depend on maritime transport and submarine cables.
