Kadis: Energy Transition an Opportunity for Sustainability

Commissioner Kostas Kadis emphasized that the energy transition is an opportunity for the resilience and sustainability of the fisheries sector, at the opening of the high-level conference on the energy transition in EU fisheries and aquaculture. The EU is committed to making the sector environmentally sustainable and climate neutral by 2050. However, this transition faces challenges, such as the lack of mature decarbonization solutions, low investment, limited access to alternative energy sources, and the difficulty of attracting new fishermen. Mr. Kadis referred to the National Programs of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), which can support engine upgrades and energy efficiency of vessels. He also presented the Roadmap for the Energy Transition, which will be integrated into the Vision 2040 for Fisheries and Aquaculture and will include innovative business ideas and infrastructure upgrades. Furthermore, he mentioned the European Ocean Pact, which unites all issues concerning the oceans and seas of the EU, and the strengthening of data collection and analysis through the European Ocean Observation Initiative and the European Digital Twin Ocean.
