Observatory Expresses Concern Over Lack of Promises Regarding Kenan Ayaz's Trial

The Observatory for the trial of Kenan Ayaz expresses strong concerns about the failure to keep promises and the transfer of responsibility regarding his case. Ayaz remains in custody, while his residence permit has not been settled despite the fact that he maintains refugee status, recognized by the Republic of Cyprus. The Observatory points out that no Cypriot authority has presented evidence of a criminal act by Ayaz, and that Cyprus chose to apply the European framework for the recognition of decisions, despite the fact that the offenses for which he was convicted in Germany do not constitute criminal offenses under Cypriot law. Furthermore, the offenses do not involve acts of violence or criminal activity. The continued detention of Ayaz is characterized as a political choice, for which the Republic of Cyprus bears full responsibility. The fact that a case is pending against him in Turkey, a state with a history of political persecution, makes any delay in his release a serious political and moral responsibility. The Observatory concludes that the failure to grant Ayaz a permit is not merely an administrative pending issue, but a political choice that exposes the Republic of Cyprus. The case has been reported by CNA.
