Blackout Risk: AHΚ Workers Decide on Escalation of Measures

Trade unions of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) (EPAPAI, SEDIKEK, SEPAHK and SYVAK) have announced that they will decide on an escalation of strike action, including the possible involvement of EAC Production, due to a series of issues requiring investigation by independent bodies. These issues primarily concern the upgrade of the Dekeleia Power Station, the implementation of central energy storage and the promotion of photovoltaic systems on roofs. The unions question the lack of state intervention in the energy sector and the inability of the competent authorities to reduce the cost of electricity for consumers. They also raise questions about possible irregularities in the issuance of licenses for renewable energy sources (RES) and conventional production, as well as the sale of these licenses at exorbitant prices. EAC employees express concerns about the role of ATIK in the energy sector and whether its involvement is to facilitate the sale of RES and conventional production licenses to private individuals. They also call for an investigation into the payment of €43 million by EAC to ETYFA and for the authorization of the former President of CERA to agree to a disproportionate allocation of the cost of the electricity interconnection. Finally, the unions raise questions about the insistence on operating the 6th unit of Vasilikos only with natural gas, the complaint about the upgrade of Dekeleia Station to the EU and the complaint about the Central Energy Storage by DSMK. They also challenge the Ministry of Energy's decision to write off accumulated production from domestic photovoltaic systems.
