Cyprus Police Union Calls for Protest Over Working Hours and Days Off

The Pan-Cypriot Trade Union ISOTITA is calling on police officers to participate massively in a protest outside the House of Representatives tomorrow, Wednesday at 09:00 a.m., protesting their working hours and days off. The union denounces an “unprecedented institutional deviation and the worst administrative arbitrariness” by the police leadership. ISOTITA is reacting to the unilateral decision of the police leadership to impose a transition from the 12x36 schedule to the 11x37 through a simple internal circular, without the consent of the Council of Ministers and the Parliament. It believes that this decision constitutes an attack on the Rule of Law and the labor rights of police officers. The union argues that the new regulation leads to intensification of work, abolition of decades-long gains, and a reduction in days off from 19.5 to just 4 days and 7.5 hours. In addition, it denounces that police officers are forced to work an additional 3.18 unpaid days per year. ISOTITA has already filed an Application for Cancellation with the Administrative Court, demanding the immediate cancellation of the circular and the restoration of legality. At the same time, it accuses the police leadership of usurping legislative power and violating the Constitution and International Conventions.
