Cyprus Presidency to Prioritize Full Implementation of New Migration and Asylum Pact

The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union will focus on the full implementation of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, expected to be in force by 2026. Deputy Minister Nikolaos Ioannidis presented the Presidency's priorities to the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament, emphasizing that preparations are in the final stages and that Cyprus will support the implementation of the Pact at all levels. Mr. Ioannidis also announced that the Presidency will host a Ministerial Conference on the Pact's entry into force, highlighting its importance for Cyprus. Migration was placed at the center of the political agenda, linking it to geopolitical instability and global inequalities, and emphasized the need for unity and collective action. Particular emphasis was placed on the issue of returns, described as crucial for an effective migration management system. The Cypriot Presidency will work to complete the relevant legislative dossier, while it was stressed that non-cooperation will no longer be a means of avoiding returns. Finally, the importance of the external dimension of migration policy and the need for partnerships with third countries was mentioned, based on the principle of “more for more”, aiming to strengthen development and local capacities for decent and sustainable outcomes.
