Italy: Residents Forced to Abandon Homes in Sicily Due to Landslide

Over a thousand residents of the town of Niscemi in eastern Sicily have been forced to abandon their homes due to an extensive landslide. The landslide, caused by an unprecedented wave of bad weather, stretches over four kilometers and has created a 'red zone' in the town, where access is prohibited. Several homes have been damaged by the ground subsidence, but so far no injuries have been reported. The landslide has disrupted the town's connection to the rest of Sicily, as one of the two main roads has been closed. The displaced residents are temporarily being housed in a closed stadium or in the homes of relatives and friends.
