Ustel Claims Republic of Cyprus Engaged in Arms Race

The self-proclaimed "prime minister" of the Turkish Cypriot side, Unal Ustel, claimed that the Republic of Cyprus is engaged in an arms race following a meeting with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz. Mr. Ustel accused Nicosia of putting pressure on the economy of the occupied territories and worsening the situation of the people, referring to the defense cooperation agreement between Cyprus, Greece and Israel. He assured that Turkish Cypriots are not alone, having Turkey by their side, and pledged a similar response. The meeting also discussed infrastructure projects in the occupied territories, such as the renovation of the hospital in Nicosia and the construction of a new 320-bed hospital, with the signing of a new financial cooperation protocol expected in March. Mr. Ustel reiterated the position of the Turkish Cypriot side for a two-state solution, emphasizing that there is international recognition of two peoples and two states in Cyprus. He believes Nicosia is exercising all kinds of pressure to stalemate the economy of the pseudo-Cypriot republic. These statements come at a time of tension in relations between Cyprus and Turkey and highlight the disagreement over the future of Cyprus. The reference to the defense cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Israel suggests the perception of the Turkish Cypriot side that Cyprus is strengthening its military power.
