Strong Political Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture, Innovation and New Technologies by the Minister of Agriculture

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency in the field of agriculture to the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI) of the European Parliament. Cyprus is focusing on sustainable agriculture, innovation and the adoption of new technologies, aiming for a resilient agri-food sector. The Minister highlighted the geopolitical and environmental particularities of Cyprus, as well as the challenges facing the Cypriot agricultural sector, such as the aging of the farmer population and climate change. The Cypriot Presidency takes office at a time of increased international tensions, with the war in Ukraine affecting European agricultural policy. Nevertheless, Cyprus is committed to delivering tangible results for farmers and rural areas, strengthening food security and improving the competitiveness and sustainability of the agricultural sector. The Minister expressed her gratitude to the previous Danish Presidency for the work already done, creating a solid foundation for continued efforts. Cyprus wants to contribute to addressing common European challenges and promoting the sustainable development of the agricultural sector. The Minister's presentation took place a few days after the first Council of Ministers of Agriculture under the Cypriot Presidency, underlining the importance Cyprus attaches to the agricultural sector during its presidency.
