Spain to Legalize 500,000 Undocumented Migrants

The Spanish government has announced it will legalize approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants, marking a significant shift in the country's migration policy. Minister of Migration Elma Saiz stated that those eligible will have full access to the labor market throughout Spain. The measure will apply to those who have resided in Spain for at least five months and have applied for international protection before December 31, 2025. It will also include the children of applicants already living in the country. The application period will run from April to the end of June. The Pedro Sánchez government argues that migration is necessary to fill labor shortages and address the aging population. This decision contrasts with the stricter approach taken by other European countries and the rise of far-right parties campaigning on anti-migration platforms. Despite a 40% decrease in irregular arrivals in 2025, Spain remains on the front lines of the migration crisis in Europe. According to the latest figures, more than seven million foreigners live in Spain, out of a total population of 49.4 million.
