Iranian Footballer Changes Mind and Returns to Iran

An Iranian footballer has changed her mind and decided to return to Iran, after initially seeking asylum in Australia along with other members of the Iranian women's national football team. Australian police helped two members of the team escape their escorts to seek asylum. Concerns for the safety of the players intensified after Iranian state television labeled them “war-time traitors” due to their refusal to sing the national anthem during a match. 21-year-old striker Mohaddeseh Zolfi and Zahra Soltan Moshkehkar had initially accepted Australia's offer of assistance. The player who changed her mind contacted teammates who had already left and decided to return. The remaining players were moved to a safe location, but their location was revealed to the Iranian embassy by the player who changed her mind. Some players requested assistance to bring their families to Australia, but this process depends on Australian approval and the families' ability to leave Iran.
