India: Death Penalty for Men Who Raped Two Women and Murdered One

Three men have been sentenced to death by an Indian court for the gang rape of two women (an American and a local) and the murder of a 26-year-old man, during an attack on a five-person group stargazing near the Hampi archaeological site. The attack took place in March 2023, when the perpetrators attacked the group, demanding money, then raped the two women while pushing the three men into a canal, resulting in one drowning. The convicted men have been identified as Mallesh, Sai and Saranappa. The sentence must be confirmed by the Karnataka state High Court and may be subject to appeal. The case has once again highlighted the chronic problem of violence against women in India. The Indian woman who was attacked stated that she was severely scratched and raped, while the Israeli woman was taken away by one of the men before being raped. The attack caused panic and led to the evacuation of the area by hundreds of terrified visitors. The 26-year-old man, Bhibas Nayak, died trying to protect the other members of the group. This case, described by the local judge as one of the rarest crimes, underscores the need for stricter measures to protect women and combat violence in India.
