EU and India Announce 'Mother of All Trade Deals' Affecting 2 Billion People

The European Union and India have signed a historic Free Trade Agreement, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed as the 'mother of all trade deals'. The agreement, creating a free trade zone of 2 billion people, comes after lengthy negotiations that were interrupted and restarted. Simultaneously, a Partnership for Security and Defence was approved, strengthening the strategic cooperation between the two sides. The agreement provides for a significant reduction in tariffs and new opportunities for trade and investment, while including clauses on sustainable development and supply chain security. Furthermore, cooperation is being strengthened in critical technologies, innovation and labour mobility, with the aim of promoting economic growth and prosperity.
